JDPC Holds AGM on Remapping the Nigerian Federation
The Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) unit of the Department of Church and Society at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria recently hosted a 2-day Annual General Meeting (AGM) on the theme: “Remapping the Nigerian Federation: The Imperatives of True Federalism.” The AGM brought together Coordinators of the JDPC across the Catholic dioceses in Nigeria
Executive Secretary/CEO and National Director of the Church and Society Department, Rev. Fr. Uchechukwu Obodoechina Ph.D, encouraged participants to articulate a charter of demand that serves as a voice of the people to Nigerian politicians. This initiative aims to ensure good governance at all levels.
Goodwill messages from partners, CAFOD Catholic Relief Services and Misereor, urged participants to continually be the light of the lay faithful through their good works at the grassroots.
The keynote speaker, Prof. Sam Amadi, Director of Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, emphasized the urgent need to remap Nigerian federalism to better address the diverse needs of its various regions. He highlighted how a more decentralized approach could empower local governments, enhance resource allocation, and foster inclusive governance.
To delve deeper into the theme, breakout sessions were held where participants discussed the imperatives of True Federalism in groups.
