Rev. Fr. Obodoechina challenges Diocesan Directors and Coordinators to influence politics and policies in their localities
The Director of the Church and Society Department, Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), Rev. Fr. Uchechukwu Obodoechina, has urged the clergy and lay faithful to actively shape society through lobbying, advocacy, and soft diplomacy.
Fr. Obodoechina emphasized that Catholics should not be passive observers of societal issues but should actively work to bring positive change. He highlighted the immense potential of the Catholic community in Nigeria to influence politics and policies, given its significant population and the influence of its leaders.
The recent Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Department of Church and Society, focused on “Promoting Catholic Social Teaching as a Vehicle for Socio-economic and Political Reorientation in Nigeria.” The event brought together diocesan directors and coordinators from various units under the department to discuss strategies for applying Catholic Social Teaching to address pressing social and political issues.
Participants were encouraged to take proactive steps to influence politics and policies in their localities by:
- Advocacy: Raising awareness about social issues and advocating for policy changes.
- Lobbying: Engaging with policymakers to influence legislation and decision-making.
- Soft diplomacy: Utilizing dialogue and persuasion to build relationships and promote understanding.
The Catholic community can contribute to a more just and equitable society by actively engaging in these activities.
