Advocating for Enhanced SRHR Education and Menstrual Health in Sokoto
On November 5, 2024, The Bakhita Initiative (JDPC Sokoto), in partnership with Plan International Nigeria and with the invaluable support of the Government of Canada, recently held a significant roundtable discussion aimed at advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) education and addressing menstrual health needs in schools across Sokoto State.
This impactful dialogue brought together a wide array of stakeholders, including the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Ministry of Health, health practitioners, civil society organizations (CSOs), and representatives from women’s groups, ANCOPSS, NUT, and leaders from religious and community backgrounds. Teachers and students from Holy Family Schools, Nana Girls Secondary School, and Alheri Schools joined in, alongside media partners from The Path Newspaper, RTV Sokoto, and Vision FM, as well as individuals with disabilities (PWDs).
The theme, “Advocating for Enhanced Teacher Training on SRHR and Establishing Funding for Provision of PAD Banks in Schools across the 23 LGAs of Sokoto State,” underscores the need for integrated SRHR education and accessible menstrual health resources in schools.
This roundtable emphasized:
• Enhanced Teacher Training: Equipping educators with comprehensive SRHR knowledge and skills to create safe, informed learning environments.
• PAD Bank Initiative: Advocating for sustainable funding to ensure menstrual hygiene products are accessible to students, supporting girls’ education and well-being across the state.
The collaboration and commitment of these diverse stakeholders signal a promising step forward in empowering Sokoto’s youth, promoting health, and building a supportive, inclusive educational landscape.
Together, we are investing in the future ensuring that every child has the resources and knowledge to succeed.
