Lagos, Nigeria – September 2024

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins, has urged well-meaning individuals and organizations across Nigeria to reflect on how they can contribute to improving lives by sharing resources to aid the less privileged in society.

This call was made during the unveiling of the seven-year strategic plan for the Catholic Caritas Foundation of Nigeria (Caritas Nigeria), a branch of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria dedicated to the support and empowerment of the poor and needy.

Archbishop Martins, who is also the Chairman of the Board of Caritas Nigeria, highlighted the foundation’s achievements since its inception 14 years ago. Over the years, Caritas Nigeria has executed more than 65 humanitarian and development projects across its primary areas of focus, reaching over 15 million beneficiaries nationwide.

He noted the impressive impact of Caritas Nigeria’s HIV/AIDS and TB interventions, which have provided HIV testing, counseling, and treatment services to over 10 million people. Currently, Caritas Nigeria offers Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) to more than 140,000 persons living with HIV and supports over 100,000 Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC). Additionally, the foundation has delivered vital humanitarian assistance to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), refugees, and returnees, particularly in the Northeast and Northcentral regions, which have been affected by insurgency.

Archbishop Martins emphasized the importance of continued support for Caritas Nigeria’s mission. On Caritas Day, September 22, the foundation will focus on giving back to the communities that have shaped its growth. He called on the government and individuals alike to join the movement to uplift the poor and become advocates for the marginalized.

Rev. Fr. Uchechukwu Obodoechina, the Executive Secretary and CEO of Caritas Nigeria, expressed gratitude to the foundation’s supporters, including international donors, for their contributions over the past 14 years. He reaffirmed Caritas Nigeria’s commitment to transparency and accountability in the use of its resources.
