JDPCI and the Presidency Forge Partnership for Disability Inclusion

The Justice Development and Peace Caritas Initiative (JDPCI) Abuja recently made a significant stride in advancing disability inclusion in Nigeria. In a momentous advocacy visit to the presidency, JDPCI representatives met with the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities. The meeting proved to be a pivotal moment for fostering a mutually beneficial partnership aimed at promoting and enhancing disability inclusion across the nation.
In a related development, the presidency held a grand ceremony to honor individuals and organizations making significant contributions to disability inclusion in Nigeria and to launch the beyond disability project. Among the distinguished awardees was the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev. Dr. Ignatius A. Kaigama. He was recognized with an Ambassadorial award for his unwavering commitment to disability-friendly and inclusive policies within the Church and the broader community.
Under his leadership, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama implemented numerous initiatives aimed at supporting people with disabilities. These initiatives included the establishment of the Polio centre in Yakoko Zing local government area of Taraba State.
in Jos Plateau State, His Grace in collaboration with Handmaid of the Holy Child Jesus, built an inclusive special education school for the deaf, blind and other vulnerable groups where they offered special education for both persons with disabilities and persons without disabilities, fostering inclusivity in practical terms.
Additionally, Archbishop Ignatius A. Kaigama authorized the integration of sign language in liturgical worship, making worship centers more inclusive and conducive for persons with disabilities and all congregants. Amongst many other achievements.
The event of the day marked a significant milestone in the journey towards disability inclusion in Nigeria. With the support of the CBM Christian Blind Mission, the presidency, and influential leaders like the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, JDPCI’s advocacy efforts were set on a promising path. The partnership between JDPCI and the presidency, bolstered by the commitment of the SSA on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, heralded a new era of collaboration and progress for the disability community in Nigeria.
