FG Ready to Collaborate with Catholic Church on Education Reforms – Minister
In a recent address, Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, announced the Federal Government’s readiness to partner with the Catholic Church on education reform initiatives to achieve comprehensive, high-quality education across Nigeria. Speaking at the 4th National Catholic Education Summit held at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria in Abuja, Prof. Mamman emphasized teamwork’s essential role in creating a dynamic and accessible educational landscape.
“The Global Compact on Education within Nigeria’s context calls for a rethinking of our educational delivery models,” said Prof. Mamman. “There is a need to focus on holistic human development, fostering creativity, and nurturing emotional intelligence in learners to better meet the demands of the modern world.” This approach aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and aims to introduce a strategic, human-centered model of education.
Represented by Dr. Claris Ujam, Director of Educational Planning, Research, and Development at the Federal Ministry of Education, Prof. Mamman praised the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria for organizing the summit, which he said underscores a shared vision for a robust education sector. He unveiled the Education for Renewed Hope: Nigerian Education Sector Roadmap (2023-2027), a strategic plan that spans 13 key thematic areas, presenting actionable steps to enhance Nigeria’s educational system. This roadmap is designed to tackle pressing issues within the sector while equipping Nigerian youth with the skills needed for the future.
One of the key highlights of the minister’s address was the introduction of the “DOTS” policy:
- Data Repository: Aiming to resolve data challenges, enabling informed decision-making and effective planning.
- Out-of-School Children’s Education: Addressing the out-of-school population by improving access and enrolment.
- Teacher Training and Continuous Professional Development: Ensuring quality education at all levels by equipping teachers with advanced skills and knowledge.
- Skills Acquisition, Development, and Digitization: Promoting skill-building initiatives from basic to tertiary education.
Prof. Mamman further called for collective action from all stakeholders to address Nigeria’s socio-economic and political challenges through education. Emphasizing that achieving educational goals is a team effort, he urged support for educational initiatives that enhance access, equity, and quality for all Nigerian students.
