Pope Francis Calls For Global Ban On Surrogacy
The 87-year-old pope called it a “grave violation of the dignity of the woman and the child” in a New Year’s address to diplomats at the Vatican.
“The path to peace calls for respect for life,” declared the leader of the global Catholic Church in a speech that was mostly devoted to pleas for an end to hostilities throughout the globe.
“The life of the unborn child in the mother’s womb, which cannot be suppressed or turned into an object of trafficking,” he stated, is where this all started.
“In this context, I find the practice of “surrogate motherhood,” which is founded on the exploitation of a mother’s monetary necessities, abhorrent. It is a serious breach of both the woman’s and the child’s dignity.
“A child is always a gift and never the basis of a commercial contract. Consequently, I express my hope for an effort by the international community to prohibit this practice universally.” The pope denounced surrogacy as “inhuman” practice in June 2022. Surrogacy that is performed on behalf of another woman or couple without any financial exchange other than for expenses is known as “altruistic” surrogacy and is allowed in Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Canada, Brazil, and Colombia.
